When precision slotting, parting, or grooving is required — especially for narrow-width operations where standard end mills would deflect or produce poor surface finish — solid carbide slitting cutters are the professional tool of choice. Used extensively in the automotive, electronics, watchmaking, medical device, and precision engineering industries, slitting cutters produce clean, accurate, narrow grooves in a single pass.
Vega Tools manufactures a comprehensive range of solid carbide slitting cutters from its Pune facility, covering standard and custom widths, diameters, and tooth geometries for all work materials.
What Are Solid Carbide Slitting Cutters?
A slitting cutter is a disc-shaped, multi-tooth cutting tool with:
- Peripheral cutting teeth (and optionally side-cutting teeth for groove wall finish)
- A central bore for arbour mounting on CNC milling machines
- Width from 0.5 mm (micro slitting) to 12 mm (heavy-duty slotting)
- Diameter from 40 mm to 200+ mm depending on depth of cut requirements
Solid carbide offers superior advantages over HSS slitting saws in production environments: longer tool life, ability to run at higher cutting speeds, and consistent width tolerance across the production run.
Key Applications of Solid Carbide Slitting Cutters
| Application | Industry | Typical Width |
|---|---|---|
| Parting-off bar stock | General engineering | 1.0–4.0 mm |
| O-ring groove machining | Hydraulics, pneumatics | 1.2–4.5 mm |
| Circlip / snap-ring grooves | Automotive, gearboxes | 0.8–2.5 mm |
| Sheet metal slitting | Electronics, HVAC | 0.5–2.0 mm |
| Undercut machining | Moulds and dies | 1.0–6.0 mm |
| Key slot (Woodruff key) | Shafts, keyways | Special — Woodruff cutter |
| PCB and electronics slotting | Electronics | 0.5–2.0 mm |
Tooth Geometry and Carbide Grade
Plain (Straight) Teeth
Standard for most steel and general-purpose applications. Simple to grind, reliable cutting action.
Staggered Teeth
Alternating left and right-hand side-cutting edges provide both peripheral and side-cutting action. Produces better groove wall finish and helps evacuate chips from narrow slots.
Side-and-Face
Full side-cutting edges along the face of the disc for aggressive side milling in T-slots or wide groove milling.
Mounting and Machine Requirements
Slitting cutters mount on precision arbours with:
- A close-tolerance centre bore (typically H6 or H7 fit on the arbour)
- A face spacer or shim to set axial position precisely
- A solid arbour on a rigid CNC milling machine — vibration is the enemy of narrow slitting cutters
Spindle runout should be below 0.005 mm TIR for best results. Excessive runout causes one side of the cutter to cut more than the other, leading to oversized grooves and premature wear.
Speeds, Feeds, and Depth of Cut
| Material | Cutting Speed | Feed/Tooth | Max DOC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low/medium carbon steel | 60–100 m/min | 0.015–0.03 mm | Width of cutter (full width) |
| Alloy steel (HRC 30–45) | 40–70 m/min | 0.01–0.02 mm | Full width |
| Cast iron | 80–130 m/min | 0.02–0.04 mm | Full width |
| Stainless steel | 30–60 m/min | 0.008–0.015 mm | Full width |
| Aluminium | 200–400 m/min | 0.03–0.06 mm | Full width |
Woodruff Key Cutters
A special category of slitting cutter, Woodruff key cutters are designed specifically for machining Woodruff key seats in shafts. Vega Tools produces solid carbide Woodruff cutters to all standard Woodruff key sizes (DIN 6888 / ASME B17.2) and custom dimensions, with coatings for hardened shaft steel.
Custom Solid Carbide Slitting Cutters from Vega Tools
Many grooving and slitting requirements are non-standard — a specific groove width to match a sealing ring, a custom diameter to suit a fixture setup, or a special tooth profile for an exotic material. Vega Tools' in-house design and grinding capability means custom slitting cutters can be designed, prototyped, and delivered efficiently. Send your specification for a fast quotation.
